Know any who’ve trained to repair one good-as-new with old-school heat-shrinking techniques using just an acetylene torch, a bucket of water, rag, dolly and a hammer? Meet Giuseppe, a content creator and 3rd-generation gearhead whose parents own a collision repair shop and began fostering his love of cars when he was born. With automotive techs in critical demand, Giuseppe aims to close that gap by engaging young enthusiasts with autobody, mechanical repair and product demos filmed straight from his garage. His metal-shrinking video alone has over 13K views on YouTube. He’s partnered with numerous companies including ZF, TRW, Sachs, Eastwood, LiquiMoly, Peak, Capri Tools, Speed and Kulture Magazine and, most recently, 5 STAR Xtreme, Pure Reflections Coatings, and The Autobody Source. And he’s just getting started. From the day he opened shop, Giuseppe’s been on a mission to fill the lack of automotive-inspired content for kids, and champion the trade skills his father gained in vocational school. His parents have nurtured him into the trade with that goal clearly in sight. A LUCKY START Giuseppe’s father, Lou, owner of Lucky’s Auto Body in Hellertown, Pennsylvania, decided early on to mentor his son’s passion for cars differently than his own father did. “I grew up around cars. Every chance I had I was in my dad’s shop. Giuseppe is even more so than me, because I used to get yelled at for doing it,” Lou recalls. He describes his father as more of a critic than a teacher. “My father was old school, he didn’t care, he just wanted to get his paycheck,” Lou says. “So there was no enthusiasm for the industry.” “But I always loved autobody, so I decided to go to vo-tech for it, and that’s when, slowly, he inspired me to get into it. That’s when I started doing my own thing,” Lou says. “Then Giuseppe came along and we’ve been two peas in a pod.” YOU CAN’T KNOW TOO MUCH When we asked Giuseppe his favorite type of automotive job, he picked them all, including autobody and mechanic work. And that’s not a coincidence. “You can never know too much,” Lou says. It’s a philosphy Lou lives by—and trains Giuseppe’s Garage has partnered with companies including ZF, TRW, Sachs, Eastwood, LiquiMoly, Peak, Capri Tools, The Autobody Source, 5 Star Xtreme, Pure Reflections Coatings, Speed and Kulture Magazine, and more. 4 HOW TO RAISE A GEARHEAD GIUSEPPE’S GARAGE IS ON A MISSION TO HELP SHAPE THE NEXT GENERATION OF GEARHEADS. HIS PARENTS—AND THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY—ARE BEHIND HIM 100%. GIUSEPPE’S GARAGE @giuseppesgarage 5 WINTER 2021 Giuseppe by to help him value teamwork and his fellow mechanics. That’s because Lou feels today’s industry climate can be different from the welcoming culture of the town he founded his shop in 25 years ago, where area mechanics borrowed tools & shared advice like close neighbors. “We were like a family. The world is changing and I’m trying not to let it change too much with my son.” INSPIRE YOUR PEERS Lou and his wife Rachel feel two things drive youngsters away from exploring automotive careers: Lack of exposure to the trades and the design of today’s cars compared to the classics. “New cars are insanely complicated and they look bland, there’s nothing attracting the eye. So I’m trying to bypass that,” Lou says of training Giuseppe to restore older cars. “We also want to expose him to both mechanical and autobody, and he’ll decide which route he wants to take,” Rachel says. Giuseppe’s idea for opening a shop and launching his platform was inspired by kids his own age. “It was all his idea,” Rachel says. “He said “Mommy, I go on YouTube and there’s nothing for me to watch, just little kids opening toys. There’s nothing about cars. Can I do a YouTube channel?”, and that’s how it started.” Lou and Rachel are imploring YouTube to change the algorithms that block Giuseppe’s videos from being included with YouTube Kids content, but for now parents can subscribe to his channel on their adult accounts to view his episodes with their children. DEMO 7 WINTER 2021 8 DO NOT MISS OUT: FOLLOW @AUTOBODYSOURCE ON INSTAGRAM + FACEBOOK AUTOBODY SOURCE STAFF Most would chalk up 2020 as the year we all could’ve skipped. But during that ‘storm’, an Alberta, Canada, refinisher gained our admiration and friendship for his supportive optimism that shines both inside and outside the booth. Come to think of it, we can’t imagine anyone in this community who wouldn’t be- come instant friends with Sheik Adamsaib once they’ve met him. Sheik was born and raised in Mauritius, East Africa, before setting his career sights up north, but his worldview stays as idyllic as that island paradise, regard- less of life’s hard times. Take notes, folks: Here’s how & why he spreads love to the collision repair community. THE MORE YOU GET BACK Before finishing high school, Sheik decid- ed to enter the workforce. His father, who was also his mentor, taught him to stake his growth on gratitude. “I went to school for two years for auto- motive painting,” a unique experience, Sheik says, because campuses on the island taught only one trade program each, versus additional occupations like automotive repair. “When I was done with my schooling, I was sent to one of the biggest dealer- ships on the island to work. I remember my dad telling me at the time “This is a great opportunity. No matter what they tell you to do, do it. Listen to their ad- vice, you’re going to go far.” I was very young at the time, about 16 or 17, but I guess from that moment I realized that you should not take anything for grant- ed. I’ve stuck to painting and along the way I’ve realized that the more you show gratefulness, the more you get back. That’s how I feel.” WHO YOU CHOOSE TO BE IN LIFE Sheik says the cultural transition made his family’s move to Canada one of the most difficult periods of his life; specif- ically, instances of being told “we don’t need immigrants here in Canada.” “At that very moment, I felt like jumping on a plane and going back home,” he recalls. “But then I also thought about the reason why I moved here, which was for my kids, and nothing was going to stop me.” Sheik says those moments motivat- ed him to excel at his craft. 8 THIS BELOVED AUTOBODY PRO IS ARGUABLY THE REFINISH FAMILY’S BIGGEST CHEERLEADER! GRATITUDE & RESILIENCE ARE HIS SUPERPOWERS. BOOTH-ROCKIN’ motivator ALBERTA, CANADA Sheik has timely advice for automotive future techs. “First of all, whoever wants to drag you down because you are a girl or thinks you are too young, don’t worry about that, because there is a thing called equality.” SHEIK @gunsandhoses_ ADAMSAIB 9 WINTER 2021 “There’s always going to be some- thing to complain about, this is human nature. But at the end of the day... who you are, who you choose to be in life is what matters.” He credits his career longevity to that same philosophy. “There are two things I don’t do in my professional life: Complain or ask for a raise. I’ve never done that in the past 22 years.” Instead, Sheik says, “I will work hard and show you that I deserve it.” WHAT’S GOING TO MAKE YOU STRONGER Sheik has timely advice for aspiring auto- motive techs. “First of all, whoever wants to drag you down because you are a girl or thinks you are too young, don’t worry about that. Because there is a thing called equality.” “And when you get into a new job, it’s al- ways tough. The environment is different, your colleagues are different, your boss is new, and the techniques for doing your job might be different from what you were doing before. You’ve got to put up with it. You have to go through this, it’s going to be your experience for the future. You have to go through tough times, because that’s what’s going to make you stronger.” To those who’ve faced peer pressure to quit or change jobs, Sheik says “I hear that a lot, “You should move to a different shop, you’ll get paid more.” Don’t worry about money. Money is not everything in life. If you wake up in the morning and are happy to go to work, then that’s where you belong.” ONE BELIEF As the only painter between two body- shop locations in western Canada, Sheik says he gets little time off. But he has one belief that fuels his fighting spirit. CONTINUES ON PAGE 20 EMPOWERTOOLS 9 “There are two things I don’t do in my professional life: Complain or ask for a raise.
