HISTORY IN THE MAKING Westfield Area YMCA 2023 Summer Day Camps Cranford, Garwood and Westfield Locations2 Dear Camp Families, In 2023, the Westfield Area YMCA is celebrating 100 years of service to the community! That’s why this year’s camp theme is History in the Making. Our campers and camp staff—past, present and future—are a part of what makes the Y the best place to spend a summer. Westfield Area YMCA Summer Day Camps provide safe, engaging, fun and meaningful camp experiences with enriching activities, fitness, and social and emotional learning for children ages 3-15. Campers enjoy a variety of activities and themes every day with friends and peers exploring math, science, arts, sports, nature and global diversity. Our curriculum promotes teamwork, enhances self-esteem and builds skills while incorporating the Y core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Our staff receive over 20 hours of pre-camp training including certification in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid with EpiPen administration, asthma inhaler training, anti-bullying prevention, behavior management, child abuse awareness and much more. We also have a full time first responder on staff for summer camp. Our camps are accredited by the American Camp Association and meet up to 300 standards for health, safety and program quality. As safety is our #1 priority, all camps meet or exceed CDC and Health Department guidelines. Camps and activities are subject to change based on guidelines in place at the time of camp. The Welcome Center may be reached at 908-301-YMCA (9622) during Main Y Facility hours and can answer most questions regarding camp. You may also contact the Camp Information Hotline at x405 and leave your name, phone number, the age of your child(ren) and a brief message…a member of our camp team will contact you! We all are looking forward to another amazing summer. See you at camp! At the Westfield Area Y, we believe camp should be inclusive, providing as many opportunities as possible for children to join in the camp fun. The Inclusion Camp Program helps us to achieve this goal by operating within the traditional Y camps each summer. Each camper who qualifies is matched with a shadow (one-to-one counselor) who is able to provide support as needed throughout the camp day. Some examples of modifications/accommodations our shadows are able to provide are: • Opportunities for breaks from the main group/activity • Picture schedules/interactive schedules • Direct prompts and assistance when preparing for transitions • Use of sensory toys • Extra time for transitions In an effort to extend this opportunity to as many children as possible, we are only able to guarantee that a shadow will be assigned to a camper for two weeks of camp. Beyond two weeks, we can only offer support if we have appropriate staff available. If you believe your child might benefit from our Inclusion Program, please reach out to us as soon as possible to see if our shadows would be able to provide the appropriate support needed to help your child have a fun, and successful, camp experience!
