JOINER’S FEE Each membership category has a Joiner’s Fee (applicable on all new memberships and memberships that have been expired for more than 30 days) which supports our financial assistance program and facility improvements. The fee is non-refundable and non-transferable. PAYMENT OPTIONS PAYMENT IN FULL Members may opt to pay in full for an entire year of membership. * Please note that memberships set to expire during a program session must be renewed before class registration may occur. MONTHLY DRAFT PAYMENT A membership can be paid monthly using our monthly draft payment plan. Monthly payment is deducted from the member’s bank account or credit card on the 5th of each month. Membership is continuous each month unless the member requests a cancellation in writing for the draft to discontinue. 30 days notice is required. SPECIAL OLYMPICS ATHLETE Through an agreement with Special Olympics of NJ, athletes are provided with a 50% lower membership rate. Please contact your branch to join. CREDIT POLICY A credit will only be offered for a program or membership due to an extended illness or emergency. Credit requests must be in writing. A doctor’s note is required along with the request. Credits which are issued will expire at the end of one year. Refunds cannot be given for programs or membership. All credit requests will be subject to a $10.00 processing fee. YOUTH POLICY - KEEPING KIDS SAFE AND SECURE Youth under the age of 12 are not permitted in the Health and Wellness Center. Youth ages 10-11 may use fitness center at Elizabeth Branch, Five Points Branch and Rahway Branch upon completion of YST class. Youth under the age of 12 must be under direct adult supervision when using the YMCA and may not be left unattended at any time. Youth must also be accompanied by an adult on the pool deck and in the locker room. Youth wearing floatation devices must be accompanied by an adult member or paid guest in the water and within arm’s reach of assistance. Youth ages 10 and 11, upon successful completion of the Youth Strength Training class, may use may use the Wellness Center Branch Fitness Center when accompanied by their parent or guardian. LOCKER ROOMS Lockers are for daily use only. Please bring your belongings and remove each day as items left overnight may be discarded. The Gateway Family YMCA is not responsible for lost or stolen items. EMERGENCY DRILLS For the safety of our members, the YMCA conducts periodical emergency drills. Healthy U utilizes the CATCH (Coordinated Approach To Child Health) curriculum, which teaches children that both healthy eating and physical activity is fun. CATCH will create healthy habits in childhood that can last a lifetime! The Healthy U Program is now incorporated within our pre-school setting. That’s why at the Early Childhood Development Centers we provide care for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years in a safe, nurturing, educational and enriching environment. Our value-based program is designed to enhance and enrich each child’s cognitive, social, physical and emotional growth. At the Y, children will learn through self exploration and guided discovery with the Creative Curriculum. Through collaboration with parents and families we provide support and strive to meet the developmental needs and temperament of each child. Financial Assistance Available — Ask the Welcome Center for an Application. tgfymca.org | 07 FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PRESCHOOL & YOUTH SWIMMING LESSONS WHAT AGE GROUP DOES THE STUDENT FALL INTO? 6 months-3 years PARENT & CHILD: STAGES A-B 3 years-5 years PRESCHOOL: STAGES 1-5 5 years & up YOUTH: STAGES 1-6 All age groups are taught the same skills but divided according to their developmental milestones. A. WATER DISCOVERY Ages 6-18 months (Parent Child 1) This is your first opportunity to expose your infant or toddler to the wonderful world of water fun and safety. The focus for this class is to ensure your baby’s first swim experience is a positive one by guiding both the parent and the child in basic water orientation. 3. WATER STAMINA Ages 3-5 (formerly Ray 1) & Ages 6-12 (formerly Guppy) Students must be able to swim/float/swim for 15yd and will build the endurance to swim/float/swim 25yd throughout the session; swimmers will work on rotary breathing and backstroke. B. WATER EXPLORATION Ages 19-36 months (Parent Child Your infant or toddler will continue to learn about water safety, while practicing basic swimming skills and breath control at a higher level of independence. 4. STROKE INTRODUCTION Ages 3-5 (formerly Ray 2) & Ages 6-13 (formerly Minnow) Students must be able to proficiently swim 25yd (15yd for preschool stage) of freestyle and backstroke. Swimmers will build the endurance to swim 50yd (25yd for preschool stage) continuously and will be introduced to both the breaststroke and butterfly kicks. 1. WATER ACCLIMATION Ages 3-5 (formerly Pike) & Ages 6-12 (formerly Polliwog 1) For the beginner swimmer to become adjusted and comfortable in the water. Participants will learn to float, perform front and back glides and proper breath control. 5. STROKE DEVELOPMENT Ages 3-5 (formerly Starfish) & Ages 6-13 (formerly Fish, Flying Fish) Students must be able to swim 50yd of freestyle and backstroke continuously. During this stage, students work on stroke technique and learn all competitive strokes. 2. WATER MOVEMENT Ages 3-5 (formerly Eel) & Ages 6-12 (formerly Polliwog 2) In this stage, swimmers should be comfortable with their face in the water and able to swim 15-20ft on their front independently (with flotation for preschool stage). Swimmers will work towards 15yd. on their front with alternating arms, and back floating for 20 seconds (10 secs for preschool stage). 6. STROKE MECHANICS Ages 6 & up (formerly Shark) In this stage, swimmers should be able to swim 150yd of freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke and will build the endurance to swim 200yd with proper turns. Throughout the session, stroke technique will be refined and students will discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle. WHAT LEVEL IS YOUR SWIMMER? Any new swimmer or swimmer who has been out of lessons for more than 6 months should be evaluated prior to registration. Evaluations are free of charge and generally take 5-10 minutes. No pre-registration is required. Contact the Welcome Center staff for more information. 08 | THE GATEWAY FAMILY YMCA FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS AVAILABLE! Available for all ages Experience customized swim lessons with one-on-one attention. Classes are offered as a set of 30 minute time blocks. Please note: due to the popularity of this program, consistent attendance is required. SEMI-PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS 2 individual participants may share a Private Swim Lesson with 1 instructor. Member must coordinate with other participants and schedule the day and time with the Aquatic Director at the Branch. You will be required to pay the Swim Lesson Fee in order to confirm this reservation. PRIVATE POD A SWIM LESSONS 3 individual participants may share a Private Swim Lesson with 1 instructor.
